    Fresh new year

The hiatus from FS work is having its desired calming effect and the break over Xmas was pleasant, allowing time to be dedicated elsewhere within the family.

Sadly, as many will know by now, this has been tempered by the loss of the MS ACE's team and the closure of both future flight and train Sim's for the foreseeable future. Personally the loss of the flight Sim side isn't too bad, we do at least have a reasonably good current ( FSx ) platform to build upon and if the truth be known the break will allow developers to fully explore that Sim, with no new flight Sim on the horizon I feel that this will be a good thing, and in time some exciting things will be discovered by current and new developers. Certainly for the next two or three years little will change, other than things getting better, PCs will catch up and eventually FSx will replace FS9 as the defacto Sim.

The really sad loss is TSx, an almost ready Sim shelved, worst of all there isn't anything elsewhere that can readily accommodate those user's looking for that next generation train Sim. Having begun to cut back on the flight Sim side of things ready for train Sim, its a kind of a big blow really, now that I'm virtually weened off FS its going to be hard to get back, but then life has a habit of doing things like this :).

Still, in an attempt to remain positive I dug around my files and resurrected the heavy cruiser project, some may already have seen her lurking in older carrier renders here and there. One big advantage of US vessels is their commonality in weapons and parts, once the war engine geared up the US produced corpulent amounts of weapons to a standard design. For modellers that great, a 5" dual 38Cal mount fits Essex carriers and many other vessels too, you simply make one model and then clone across as many projects as you wish. Like the Essex class the Baltimore heavy cruisers had a long career, many served in WW, Korea and I believe some were upgraded to serve in Vietnam, though one has to look very hard to see the original cruiser in say the Albany class, with their massive tower superstructures and full missile fit ( one of those is planned later in the year ).

Current projects include CA-135 USS Los Angeles to support the Essex carrier CV-21 USS Boxer for the Korean era package and for WWII the exact vessel has yet to be determined, as has the carrier if the truth be told, but it will probably be one Ms 32 splinter camo to match one carrier package and one Ms 12 to match another carrier package.

A new folder has been added with a few initial renders so far, hopefully these, like the carriers will be updated through out the year and maybe a few other ship projects will surface too, some military and some commercial, aka Ro-Ro's ( a particular favourite class of vessel of mine ), container, bulk or tanker.

Finally, a word of thanks to all who post comments, it is much appreciated.

    Kindest

    hi Michael,

I have reading that thread. Progress is happening, slowly, one step at a time. I'm still searching for that SDK fellow.

Addendum, check over at SoH and you'll see some of us have solved the only one cat working issue, primarily its as simple as case sensitive animation coding in the model, but there also seems to be a boundry from the vessels ref point, if you go outside of that the cats refuse to work, currently it looks like 60-70m.

Robert, excellent information, I'll be picking up those updates shortly, a regraded F-14 would be nice too, the T-45 is very easy on frames and makes mid spec machines capable of fluid cal quals.

    Best

    Hi,
Once again Dino has upgraded the T-45C and the list of improvements is interesting, especially the gear during landing. Quote----

" am releasing another Goshawk update right now. I know that some of you may be getting bored with all these updates... especially the ones with a slow internet connection. Still, please understand it is much more convenient for me to release a full version rather than a update: it is simply much a better to catch the bugs, support the users if necessary and basically keep track of what is happening to your files. File name is T$%CFSXE.ZIP, release at Avsim.com and Flightsim.com.Hope you apprieciate the (small) improvements!
VERSION 1.25 - CHANGES FROM PREVIOUS RELEASE

    Visual model:
    - Air intake geometry now blends into the fuselage more smoothly
    - Added repaints by Russell R.Smith- Added configuration file for proper U.S.Navy font. As you may have noticed, the aircraft number in my Goshawk model is variable (i.e.the user can type his/her own number). However, the number will appear withstock fonts. Should you have the "Long BeachUSN" font type installed, delete the aircraft.cfg andrename the aircraft_properfont.cfg to aircraft.cfg.

    Interior model:
    - Revised some of the cockpit geometry (which looked slightly too "bulky")
    - Desaturated / darkened / sharpened some textures.
    - Fixed NAV1 KHz tuning bug (it was impossible to activate the KHz knob)- Added Autopilot heading course select (via the HUD keypad + / - buttons); I know this is not the way it is supposed to work...but at least the function is there.
    - Fixed "CLIMB/DIVE" words in the ADI (were mirrored)- Reduced photoreal texture warp on right side console
    - Minor optimizations

    Flight model:
    - Tuning to the gear contact points (provided by Richard Wisman). While the aircraft sits slightly higher than it should, now the problem of the nose "sinking" into the deck while landing on a carrier is almost gone.
    - Minor tunings to yaw
    Have fun!"

In addition, Dino has posted new pics of the F-14D. It is closer to release.

It seems to my mind, or whats left of it, that I may have sent a comment about a post ----from months past----that one of the Aces team who made the Accel carriers was going to try to write an addition to the SDK, so to speak, that would help developers make carriers. But time has passed and I'm unaware of any such work. I've searched for proof of my own words but so far no joy. Wish I could contact this fellow(s) or rather, you could. Anyway, slow progress is likely the better road to travel.

Dino has updated his new FSX F-14D http://indiafoxtecho.blogspot.com/2009/03/f-14d-outer-model-complete.html

Blackbird, Yes you are quite correct, I found the T-45 much easier to fly and trap when setting up the bespoke carrier animations on the Essex model recently, hopefully a update on those trials and tribulations in the near future.

I did see the update but have not yet collected, thanks for the reminder

I've no idea if this is a help no a recall if I've mentioned this application but I offer it all the same.

    http://lc0277.nerim.net/wiki/index.php?Adapting%20FSX%20aircrafts%20to%20acceleration%20carriers

At the bottom of the page is ------
"To easily toggle display of marker states, try this little application (requires .net 2.0)"

Hoping you don't mind my interest, of which there may be too much, nor my help of which there is too little of real value.

Train Sim 2 is a loss and a mystery. Stopping work on it makes no sense to me. Delaying FS11 may be wise as that could give FS people time to catch up, so to speak, but TS2 is overdue. It's been a long time since the 1st train sim.

Perhaps there will be developments we know nothing about. MS hasn't made a generous offering of future plans now nor in the past.

Anyway, this is no time for despair.

Using the freeware T-45C is a good idea as I use it very much. The Accel F/A-18C has been improved by others as the simouthouse forum thread http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?t=9313 shows many helping ideas.

An aircraft can "release" from the cat before the launch command if the main gear is not correct. See the thread above. The Accel Hornet is much better now. I believe an experiment is taking place to help landing "crashes" but whether it will work is not known by me.
